WILMA MORRISON (1951-2025)

Wilma showing Fara in 2014

The Scottish Beagle Club was saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Wilma Morrison on 10th April.

Wilma was well known in the Scottish dog show scene. She was secretary of Clackmannanshire Canine Club for many years and its open show had been held less than four weeks earlier. Wilma was also very involved in Broxburn & District Ringcraft Club which she attended weekly as one of the trainers and organisers.

From the 1970s Wilma and husband Richard (Dick) were well known for breeding and showing Cavalier King Charles Spaniels under their Bowerswell affix. The last litter of Cavaliers was born in 2007. Wilma was a life member of The Scottish Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club.

In the 1980s the first beagle joined the family, owned by 12 year old daughter Nadine. This was Dewlingsted Merrymate born in 1984. She was mated to Ch Mistylaw Willy Nilly which resulted in two sisters which were kept, tri Dinman Razzle Dazzle and tan & white Dinman Hubble Bubble. Razzle Dazzle had a litter in 1987 to Mistylaw Atlas and Nadine kept the tri dog Dinman Rooster Coburn who was shown with success. Hubble Bubble had a litter in 1988 to Mistylaw Chuckle of Millmar. From this litter Dinman The Cisco Kid was owned by Wilma. In the same year Nadine obtained Norcis Teale, a tri dog puppy from Eleanor Bothwell followed by Deanery Bracken of Marton, a tan & white dog bred by Wal and Jean Westren. As well as showing in the breed classes Nadine was a talented and successful junior handler.

When Nadine left home the beagles were transferred to Wilma. The first “Bowerswell” beagles was a litter by Deanery Bracken to Deanery Beatrix in 1993 which produced three puppies, from which a tri dog Bowerswell Guinnes and a tan & white bitch Bowerswell Rowena were shown.

It wasn’t until 2011 that another beagle joined the Cavaliers. This was Newlin Iona at Bowerswell who gained her ShCM. From Iona’s litter sired by Newlin Flint in 2013, Wilma kept a tri bitch, Bowerswell Fara who gave birth to the last litter of Bowerswell beagles in 2015. From this litter sired by Ch Molesend Kaftan Wilma kept Bowerswell Lamm Tarra, a tan & white mottle bitch.

Wilma served on the Scottish Beagle Club committee from 2013-2023.

Wilma had been married to Dick since 1970 and was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Thoughts and sincere condolences to Dick and all her family.

Rest in Peace Wilma.

It was a very good ‘Good Friday’ for Luisa Fallon and her boy Newlin Rambler AW(G) aka “Boss”. At Pal Agility KC show in Kelso on 18th April Boss won Grade 6 agility as well as two 2nd places and now goes up to Grade 7. A great achievement.

The last news for April comes from WELKS CHAMPIONSHIP show which was held on Monday 28th April. The beagle entry was 35/43 dogs and 42/49 bitches giving a total entry of 77 beagles/92 entries. The judge was Luke Johnston (Danluke) who was awarding CCs in the breed for the first time.

SBC members had a very good day starting with Pam & Lynda Havard’s Annavah Justify who was awarded his 2nd DCC with Christine LewisFallowfield Charming Boy winning BPD. In bitches Sam Goldberg’s Molesend Impish (pictured below at HAS) won her first BCC and BOB with David Craig’s Davricard Bianca taking the RCC and also BPIB. Bianca later won HPG4 judged by Mrs Yvonne Cannon.

May

The first news of May is from DEVON, CORNWALL & SOUTH-WEST BEAGLE SOCIETY who held their CHAMPIONSHIP at Mark, near Highbridge in Somerset on Sunday 4th May. Sadly this was the society’s last ever Championship show as it is folding. Exhibitors will have lots of great memories of the shows over the years in various venues. Plagued by poor weather the last few years, this final show was able to be held outdoors in lovely sunshine. There were photo albums of past shows on display and a super buffet. The cake pictured below left was made by Michelle Kingsland’s daughter. Patron Barbara Roderick gave a short speech and cut the cake (left) and everyone toasted the society and no doubt shared many memories. Depicted on the side of the cake is Barbara with her winners at the 1997 show at Wincanton racecourse (below right). On the other side was a picture of Mal Phillips when he judged in 1994.

Claire Jones (Clairdale) was the judge for this final show. The entry was 34 dogs and 59 bitches making a total of 93 hounds and 118 entries. A very good entry in today’s times but nothing like the entries of the past which likely won’t be seen again.

Two SBC members had a very successful day with Serena Parker & Graham Stevens’ Serenaker Saltydog winning his 2nd DCC and BIS and Ch S. Elle’s Belles BVB & RBVIS. Christine Lewis’ Fallowfield Magic at her first show won the RBCC and BPIS and F. Charming was BPD & RBPIS.

It’s been a busy time for exhibitors as BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP show on Thursday 8th May was the third Championship show in less than two weeks. The beagle entry was 68 beagles making 81 entries for judge Editha Newton (Nevedith) who was awarding CCs in the breed for the first time.

SBC members Serena Parker, Christine Lewis and Pam & Lynda Havard were in the main awards. Serena took the DCC and BOB with Ch Serenaker Armani, the Havards Ch Annavah Tiana won her 51st BCC and in doing so became the BREED RECORD HOLDER. Chrisitne’s Fallowfield Chelsey took the RBCC and her F Charming Boy was BPIB

The SCOTTISH KENNEL CLUB held two back to back CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS. Hounds were on day 4 Sunday 18th May.

Show 1 was judged by Anne Binks (Tannahill) awarding CCs for the first time. From an entry of 44/51 the DCC and BOB was Christine Lewis’ Ch Fallowfield Vincent with Darren Fellows’ Rosanka Brdges taking the reserve. BCC was a first for David Craig’s Davricard Bianca who was also BPIB and won HPG1 judged by Mr R Bott. RBCC was Hazel Deans’ Ch Gempeni Cornflower ShCEx. BVIB was Melanie Raymond’s Ch/VDH Ch Dialynne Peter Piper and BSpBIB was Luisa Fallon’s Molesend Jackpot.

Show 2 had an entry of 49/56 and was judged by Jill Peak (Bayard). Tim Jones & Stephen Jepson won both the DCC and RDCC with Eardley Ready For Anything who was BOB and Eardley Trot On. BCC was a very quick 2nd for Davricard Bianca with RCC going to Samantha Goldberg’s Molesend Jazzy. Bianca was also BPIB and won HPG2 judged by Mrs M Harding. Peter Piper was again BVIB and won HVG1 before going on to BVIS, both judged by Mr K Berry. Jackpot was again BSpBIB.

Just 5 days later BATH CHAMPIONSHIP show was held on Friday 23rd May. The beagle entry was 52 beagles making 73 entries for judge Mr Jeff Horswell.

David Craig was the only SBC member in the top awards, this being Davricard Bianca who was the BCC winner and BPIB. Although this was Bianca’s 3rd CC (in 5 days) she does not yet have her Champion title, requiring to win a CC over the age of 12 months. Bianca went on to win another HPG2 judged by Mr M James.

Pictured left and centre is a happy Erica Matthew with Carvaha Barney Rubble after winning AV Hound Minor Puppy and going on to win Reserve Best Special Minor Puppy In Show at Banff, Moray & Nairn CC open show on 25th May. The judge was Sandra Johnston (Burnvale). Photo on right taken at the recent SKC show.

June

Sunday 1st June was hound day at SOUTHERN COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP show. There were 68 beagles/85 entries for judge Frank Kane.

Serena Parker & Graham Stevens’ Ch Serenaker Armani was the winner of the RDCC. David Craig’s 11 month old Davricard Bianca was awarded her 4th BCC, BOB and BPIB. She later went on to win HPG1 judged by Kimmo Munstonen from Finland.

Hound day at THREE COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP show was Friday 6th June. The judge Mr W Armstrong (Cornstalk), who was awarding CCs in beagles for the first time, had a good entry 78 beagles/97 entries.

Serena Parker & Graham Stevens’ Ch Serenaker Armani was the winner of the DCC and BOB. David Craig’s Davricard Bianca was awarded her 5th BCC and BPIB. She went on to win another HPG1 judged by Mrs S Duffin who judged all the puppy groups except gundogs and BPIS. David and Bianca returned two days later and it was third time lucky as Bianca was awarded BEST PUPPY IN SHOW!

THE BEAGLE CLUB held their 128th CHAMPIONSHIP show at The Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh on Sunday 8th June. There was an excellent entry of 51 dogs entered for judge Mr Martin Sanders (Castellcoch) and 74 bitches for Christine Lewis (Fallowfield).

Samantha Goldberg’s Molesend Jazzy won another RBCC and Serena Parker & Graham Stevens’ Ch Serenaker Elles Belles was BEST VETERAN IN SHOW

Serena and Graham’s Ch Serenaker Armani was having a rest day at home but his offspring did him proud winning DCC, RDCC, BCC and RBCC.

There were three Scottish shows for beagles over the weekend of 14th and 15th June.

The weekend started with the first day of BORDER UNION CHAMPIONSHIP show held at Kelso in the Scottish Borders. Unfortunately the weather was very wet so judging took place under canvas.

Beagles had an entry of 63 making 78 entries for judge Lynn Bailey (Salenko). Of the 54 present only 9 exhibits were resident in Scotland owned by 6 Scottish exhibitors.

DCC & BVIB was Deaconfield Kingcraft with Annavah Justify taking the reserve. Ch Annavah Princess Tiana was the BCC & BOB winner. The RBCC stayed in Scotland, going to Tannahill Calissa. BPIB was Davricard Bianca.

There was no placing for Tiana in the hound group but Kingcraft won HVG3 judged by Mrs Irene McManus (Metexa) and Bianca was the HPG1 winner judged by Mr G Corish (Sealaw). Bianca’s win meant a busy weekend for her owner David Craig. David was due to judge the Scottish Beagle Club Championship show the following day at Crawfordjohn. On completion of his judging and lunch David travelled back to Kelso and was rewarded with Bianca winning RESERVE BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

The second day of the weekend was the SCOTTISH BEAGLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP and OPEN SHOWS held in the picturesque village of Crawfordjohn in South Lanarkshire.

As mentioned above David Craig was the judge for the Championship show. He had an entry of 72/76 including 4 NFC.

It was a memorable weekend for Miss Debbie & Mrs Sally Taylor whose Deaconfield Kingcraft was awarded his 3rd CC giving him his title. It was another RDCC for Lynda & Pam Havard’s Annavah Justify. BCC was a first for Sam Goldberg’s 13 month old Molesend Jazzy. Claire Tanner’s Felinoak Hennessy who is one day older than Jazzy took the RBCC. Jazzy was BEST IN SHOW and Kingcraft RESERVE BEST IN SHOW and BEST VETERAN IN SHOW. Sharon Hardisty’s BLUNDERHALL JACKSON was BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

The OPEN SHOW was judged by Ms Jane Maxwell (Bardrestan) whose entry was 55/59.

Main results are:

BD & BIS Serenaker Saltydog (Serena Parker & Graham Stevens), RBD & RBIS Blunderhall Jacks The Lad (Sharon Hardisty), BB & BOS Ch Gempeni Cornflower ShCEx (Hazel Deans), RBB Serenaker Liberty Belle (Serena Parker & Graham Stevens), BPIS Blunderhall Jackson (Sharon Hardisty), BVIS Gempeni Flower Girl JW ShCM VW (Hazel Deans).

Full results and photos for both show to follow soon.

BLACKPOOL CHAMPIONSHIP show was held on the Summer Solstice, Saturday 21st June. There were 65 beagles/75 entries for Mrs Ruth Lockett-Walters to judge.

SBC members Lynda & Pam Havard, Christine Lewis, David Craig and Samantha Goldberg were all in the main awards.

The Havards’ did the double winning the DCC with Annavah Justify and BCC & BOB with Ch Annavah Princess Tiana. This was Justify’s 3rd CC so he becomes the breed’s latest champion. It was Tiana’s 54th CC and she went on to win HG4 judged by Mrs E.A. Macdonald. The RDCC was won by Christine’s Ch Fallowfield Fellman, RBCC & BPIB by David’s Davricard Bianca and BJIB by Samantha’s Molesend Impish who won HJG4 judged by breed specialist Darren Fellows. Bianca went on to win her fifth HPG1 which was judged by Mrs E.P. Hollings and returned on the final day to win her second BEST PUPPY IN SHOW judged by Mr D Smith. David only just made it in time for the Best Puppy final. Having left home in plenty time he then encountered a ten mile queue on the M6 motorway which resulted in him arriving at the show with 10 minutes to spare. That’s what you call cutting it fine!
